Navajo Tacos

An online recipe with instructions for making Navajo Tacos. This dish has also been known as Frybread Tacos and Indian Tacos. Navajo Tacos were unofficially voted the State Dish of Arizona in 1995 by the readers of the Arizona Republic Newspaper.

Ingredients

- 1 (one pound) loaf of frozen bread dough, thawed
- oil for deep frying
- 1 (15 ounce) can of chili beans
- shredded lettuce
- 6 ounces of shredded cheese
- 1 large tomato
- 1 (3.25 ounce) can of black olives
- 1/2 cup of sour cream

Instructions

Slice the bread dough into 8 equal pieces Gently stretch each piece into a 7-inch diamter circle. (lightly flour your hands if the dough sticks to your fingers.)

Preheat to 375 degrees enough oil for deep frying in a dutch oven or deep skillet. Deep fry the bread rounds until they are golden brown on both sides. Drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil.

Top each round with the beans, shredded lettuce, cheese and tomato. Garnish the top with the black olives and sour cream.
