their own chapter. If the walls could only talk. It has been a pleasure

According to the general manager (Ken Neutz), the Tuesday Wednesday and
Thursday moring sessions are adult oriented with a mix of new, old and
organ music and it's a great rink, lots of fun. The Wednesday night
session tends to have more adults, but there are still kids present.

A farily extensive article in the 8/2/96 Sacramento Bee mentions that
this is largley a teen scene. The rink has a castle/medieval decor
but has the usual lights, sound system and a smoke machine. Sessions
are broken up into the traditional couples/forward/backwards/etc.
There is a uniformed sherrif on duty during the crowded teen sessions,
but rules are generally loosely enforced.

Our rink, Redwood Roller Rink in Redwood City, has excellent teachers
and this year took several first places at Nationals with the kids.
We also just got back from the Gold Skate competition in Bakersfield,
where every single entrant from out rink made it into the finals and
we ended up winning the production number (among others).

[ SBeckstrom@aol.com (Sonya Beckstrom) - edited ]
I am surprised that so many skaters that win at regionals come from
the Redwood Roller Rink. That floor is horrible AND small!!!

[ harbour@rapnet.sanders.lockheed.com (Susan Harbour) - edited ]
I too was totally amazed at how teeny it was, and what bad shape the
floor was in. When I made my call home to tell my S.O. where I had
skated and how things were going, he went wild when I mentioned
Redwood City - how many champions - what a reputation...

Well, I went back a couple of times, and still never figured it out...
I never even saw any of these wonderful skaters skating or anything,
but last year, the day we were at Redwood City, there were about 5
different lessons going on - amazing in itself given the floor size -
one very nice freestyle lesson and a pretty good pairs lesson as well.

[ harbour@rapnet.sanders.lockheed.com (Susan Harbour) - edited ]
Redwood is a very old rink. When you approach it, it looks old, in some
respects it kind of has that 50's-60's feel to it. I would say that the
floor is not larger than 160'x65' or possibly 165'x70'. The thing that
makes it feel even smaller is that there are walls on three sides...two
of them along the "long" sides of the rink so that there is only a little
teeny "off floor" area on the short end of the floor.

When I was there three years ago the floor was dinged up really badly.
It is wood, probably maple, but very old. Last year when I visited we
didn't get to skate on the floor, so I don't really know if it's still
in such bad shape. What really slayed me, was that they had added a
railing or something along the long sides of the floor, so that it didn't
actually go all the way to the walls, making it even smaller!

[ satsang@pacbell.net (Jim Miller) - edited ]
Yes, it's true that Redwood Roller Rink is small with a crappy floor,
but they've had champions for over 30 years. Rink isn't everything.
Redwood people go elsewhere as often as they can to skate on larger and
better floors. You'd be amazed at how many national champions have come
from inferior rinks. You can't keep a good skater down!

But the ultimate skating experience in the Bay Area in my opinion is
Golden Gate Park on Sundays. the park is closed to traffic on that day
(certain agent's are trying to close it on Saturdays, too.) The weather
is great, actually better in the winter than the summer it seems.

There are *tons* of skaters cruising up and down the roads, in-line and
quad, as well as skate boards, bicycles, horses - well, okay, only the
police.

There's a wild dance scene at 6th Ave from noonish until dark. (Bay Area
skaters - am I right?) There are two places I know of that rent skates
that are walking distance to the park: Skates on Haight, and Magic Skate
at Fulton and 6th. Be there or be square!

[grr]
The phone numbers are for the SF Park Department which in charge of
events licenses and whatnot, and the Friends of Recreation and Parks
a community organization. CORA is probably a better source of info
for events.

The California Outdoor Rollerskating Association (CORA) is involved
in the Skate Patrol at the park and organized many outdoor events in
the Park and San Francisco area, such as the Friday night City Skate
that leaves from the Ferry Terminal at the foot of Market Street.

They also [8/95] had a "Skatin' Place" TV show on the local TV Show.
Call 415-752-1967 for CORA specific information.

See http://www.cora.org for lots of CORA and Bay Area in-line information.

Recently a "FreeThePark Coalition" has been formed to promote the
interests of various park users including skaters and cyclists. Their
long term program is apparently to maintain the park as a quiet open
space preserve and to discourage automotive presence within the park.
Their immediate intent is to oppose a bond measure which would lead
to the construction of a large parking building within the park.

The Rolladium is a nice neighborhood rink located just south of the
San Fransico Airport, in San Mateo, California. The floor itself is
slightly undersized, but plenty large enough to skate fast or slow, as
you like. You will also enjoy the brand new [July 96] surface.

The facility offers both quad and inline (extra) rentals, with snack bar,
eating area, lockers, and game room. Full party service available and
encouraged by reservation.

If you are into Artistic skating, instruction is available, with staff
members improving their skills in competition. The rink supports Hockey
leagues, through NIHA sanction and rules. Membership is required to join
a league.

The Rolladium is right next to the freeway. I haven't been there in
about two years, but they had some sort of gang shooting there several
years [1988] ago! Their Friday and Saturday night sessions, as at
many rinks, can get pretty wild.

In the late 80's, they had a strong artistic/freestyle club with
national placements, but now I am unsure of how they are doing now.

My favorite was Aloha Skate Palace in South San Jose on a Monday night -
Great songs, good crowd.

[ geo@shilah.Eng.Sun.COM (george atkins) ]
I've heard nice things about the Aloha Roller Palace. I've never been
there but I've heard that it's a real skate scene, especially on Friday
nights. The place is said to be large.

[ Ron Nikel ]
The Roxy is home of the current world Dance champions. It is a real
energetic environment. I like it a lot except the owners don't really
take care of the skating surface.

[ Rod Allen ]
The Golden Skate Roller Palace (I believe), which was known as Aloha and
then as Roxy's, is located on Blossom Hill Road near the intersection with
Snell. It has world-class skaters and sends numerous skaters to nationals
every year. The head coach is Larry Chopp.

[ DSnowden@earthlink.net (Dave Snowden) ]
The Aloha Skating Club in South San Jose has a very large artistic club.
I think Tuesday nights they have a public dance session.

[ harbour@rapnet.sanders.lockheed.com (Susan Harbour) ]
I skated here a few times when I was doing a lot of work related travel
to the San Jose area. The floor is asphalt with a roll-on coating, so it's
not a very stable/hard floor. There were a few rather large "speed bumps"
right on the figure circles when I was there. The floor is pretty small
too, I'd say probably like 160'x60'.

They did have a beginner adult class mid-week sometime, but every time I
went there was no coach present to do the class.

[ skate@graphcomp.com - net gleanings ]
A number of STI Folks get together every Wednesday evening for roller
skating and dinner at a local family restaurant. If you are in the
area and would like to join us, it's at Skate World - behind the Decor
unfinished furniture warehouse.

It's an adult session that starts at 7:30pm, although lessons are also
available at 7:00 pm for an additional fee at 7:00. The session ends
at 9:30, at which point we caravan to someplace for dinner - usually
Coco's, on Kieley, just off of Saratoga, south of Stevens Creek.

Skate World is a ancient rink in Santa Clara which, in the past few
years has made some major changes to accomodate the hockey scene.

I didn't actually get to skate here, but we did have a chance to look
around the last time I was in California. This is an old time mom & pop
rink near the boardwark in Santa Cruz. The floor is the original wood,
I believe maple, with a clear roll-on coating. The rink itself is very
small and reduces its public session schedule during the "off season".
No video games, virtually no snack bar, and extremely limited off-floor
space...but very well kept and extremely clean.

Although initially promoted as a roller rink, this is apparently a
fairly standard Mountasia Fun Center, with only a small skating floor.
It has the usual miniature golf, batting cages, bumper boats and cars,
arcade and snack facilities.

The rink is open thoughout the fun center hours, with before and after
5:00 PM being separate sessions. Based on other Fun Center experiences,
the rink may be vacant or crowded with kids parties depeding on the day
and time.

Closed?

This rink has proved pretty elusive. There are no listings for a rink
anywhere in this area, and newspaper articles in the early 90's lament
the lack of a roller rink in the Santa Clarita area, without mentioning
one that closed. A 1991 article mentions a rink to open "next month",
but no details. The above Mountasia Fun center is actually quite close
to this location, but didn't open until 1995.

My favorite is Moonlight Rollerway in Glendale: it is close, has a
large enough rink, and has nice skaters/management.

Wednesday evening is a dance session with organ music, open to everyone,
but has a lot of dance-pairs, and about 20 minutes of organized dances.

Sunday evening is Gay night, open to anyone (who doesn't mind the couples,
and a couple dances you might not want to join). I've never been, but I
know straight people who do go.

Wednesday and Friday afternoons are "kids" sessions, but is not at all
crowded, so ideal for "fancy skating".

[ grr@tharsis.com ]
This is a nice classic rink, with a wood floor that's in great condition
except for a few minor ripples near the wall by the DJ booth. While
traveling on business, I dropped in on the annual Halloween party. There
was a small but friendly crowd. It was mentioned that there was usually
a larger crowd for the Organ sessions than when I was there, and someone
also recommended the Monday night session for DJ type music and backwards
skating.

This rink is also the home of Rinx Records (818-848-4161), a skating music
mail-order house currently operated by Dominic Cangelosi. Dominic also
plays the organ and is the owner of the rink, not to mention being one
hell of a nice guy...

[ snowden@ix.netcom.com (Dave Snowden) - edited ]
Moonlight is Owned and operated by Dominic, of Rinx Records fame.
Dominic gets behind his Hammond Organ and plays for the Tuesday Night
Rexxing Session and the Wednesday Night Artistic Dance Session!!!
Dominic keeps the rink very clean and is always spiffing up the interior
and exterior!!!

There is a very active Artistic Club and opportunities to take skating
achievement Tests.

Birthday Parties during sessions and private parties are very numerous.
There are sometimes additional sessions at other times, mainly during
Holidays and for special groups.

Rinx Records is also housed at the rink and records, tapes and CDs may
be purchased/ordered during the daytime from 9 AM to 4 PM and on Tuesday
and Wednesday nights during the session times.

[ JSKOGA@CSUPOMONA.EDU (James S. Koga) - edited ]
After all this time, my partner and I finally made it to Wednesday night
dance (organ music) public session the Moonlight Rollerway. First of
all, the rink itself is beautiful - from the spotless parking lot lit up
as bright as day, to the sparkling wooden skating floor, the place just
bespeaks pride of ownership.

One really unique feature of that rink - there are light up signs for
"All Skate", "Couples" etc., which is rare enough these days, but there
are als light up signs for "Forward Rexxing" and "Backward Rexxing".

The visit was an immersion into another culture. At our rink, we are
basically it for dance skaters. At the start of the session, Dave
Snowden was the only person we knew, but by the time we left, several
people had struck up conversations with us and introduced themselves.

My partner was a little nervous when it came to sharing the floor with
such advanced dancers - with some of the border patterns, it was hard
to tell where they were headed. We were the only lower bronze level
dancers there - everyone else was doing more advanced stuff. The floor
was smaller than our regular rink, and we have seldom had a chance to
skate as a team in any other rinks.

One thing that could have been better: apparently Dominic takes some
time off after Nationals, so we didn't get to skate to live organ music.

Skateland draws a mostly young, fast crowd but it is also family oriented.
Mostly people are pretty cool but you have your little cliques or exclusive
type crowds of kids - "locals" that are jerks sometimes because a lot of
them are little rich kids. Northridge is a fairly exclusive area, mostly
upper middle class to very well off.

For the most part it is a good place to skate. A lot of famous/movie and
TV star kids skate there, as well as at some of the other local rinks in
the San Fernando valley area.

[ snowden@ix.netcom.com (Dave Snowden) ]
Very active artistic club, mostly freestyle, but also dance, figures and
JO program. Also a roller hockey program. The rink is owned by David

The Flemings consider their rink to be almost a nightclub for kids and
are vigilant about security and warding off rowdyism. They stress that
the rink has no gang problems and behavior/dress codes help keep the
rink a safe, family-oriented, skating environment.

[ web gleanings ]
The Serman Square rink had a lot of gang related problems in the early
90's. Their adult night became popular with youth gang members and
gradually turned in to a gang night and drive-by. Most of the gang
members were happy to have a social skate, but there were too many
confrontations between rival gangs, loitering non-skaters and also
fighting, drinking, and drug dealing problems in the parking lot.

The rink eventually discontinued all public sessions and is now only
available for rentals, parties and roller hockey.

Every time I goto LA, I like to go to World on Wheels. It's funny
going though a metal detector and then a metal wand, but its worth
the shake. Crowd and music make u get the grove on better. Most of
the standard rinks play top 40 music or other crap. I want to hear
some Maze, Earth Wind & Fire and under-ground rap.

[ grr ]
This rink is located in the basement of the Mid-Town Lanes Bowling
Alley. The neighborhood is described in the newspaper as being on
neutral ground between Crips and Bloods gang territories, and there
were several indcidents of gang related violence associated with
trying to use the rink as a meeting center for peace talks, if not
not directly skating related. Use your own best judgement here...

Tuesday & Thursday are adult nights. Sessions last for several hours.
Both nights have oldies but goodies as the music format.

This rink is *very* small and is in the 'hood. Tuesday is safest night.

Roller skating on a old fashioned wooden rink. There are special adult
nights on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. There is a skating club that
specializes in dance skating--a version of ballroom dancing on wheels.

A June 1994 LA Times "Scene" article goes into a lot of detail about
the teen social scene at the Fountain Valley rink, but doesn't say
much about the rink itself. It is a community rink... An earlier
article from December 1992 includes an interview with Bob Labriola

As of April 1995, Aquarius closed due to structural deterioriation in the
roof that was too expensive for them to repair. They had a liquidation
sale to sell all the shop stock, rentals and so on, so I guess any kind of
re-opening sounds unlikely.
