Bicentennial Plaza Ice Rink
Grant Park
312-294-2420

[ web gleanings ]
Bicentennial Plaza Ice Rink is small but great for tricks and dancing
when the ice is gone. The surface is absolutely smooth and blemish-free.
There are also trails with varying surface quality throughout Grant Park.

There is also organized Hockey, Racing and Aggressive in-line skating
activity in the summer at the DiGiornio Sports Pavilion in the park.

See http://www.skaters.com/index.html, the Skate! Chicago web page
for any information on scheduled events.

Navy Pier - Festival Hall
600 East Grand Avenue off Lakeshore Drive
312-595-7437

Winter 1996/1997 Schedule
Dec. 20 & Jan 10: 5-11pm (one session)
Dec. 16, 17, 18, 19; Jan. 2, 6, 7, 8, 9: 5-10pm (one session)
Dec. 15, 21, 22, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29; Jan. 3, 4, 5, 11, 12:
	10am-2pm; 2:30pm-6:30pm; 7pm-11pm (three sessions)
Dec. 24: 10am-2pm; 2:30pm- 6:30pm (two sessions)

Seasonal
Open only on specific scheduled winter dates.
In-line rentals available

The Navy Pier is a large pier jutting into Lake Michigan on the downtown
Chicago lakefront, just north of Grant Park, that is being turned into
a recreational/tourist area. Festival Hall is a normally a large indoor
exhibition hall, but during the winter there are occassional scheduled
indoor skating days, in the spirit of the "Skate the Dome" events in the
some other Great Lakes area cities.

Festival hall seems to have a relatively smooth sealed concrete floor,
but with some "sidewalk cracks". They boast a 1/3 mile indoor oval.
If it's like other exhibition halls I've seen, there are probably dirty
or sticky areas and odd bits of tape here and there. On at least some
of the scheduled days there are also some portable ramps and slalom
cones set up, and entertainment.

This is nominally an in-line event, but I haven't heard that quads are
prohibited. However, 5-wheel in-line racing skates are allowed only
at the evening sessions, probably to maintain the fun & family nature
of the daytime sessions. Skating in packs or pace lines is prohibited.

The overall Navy Pier is also supposed to be a fairly popular outdoor
in-line skating area, with a mile of paved promenade, open 6 AM - 10PM.

Wood Floor - Medium size - fair condition - small practice floor
In-lines permitted and for rent.

[ jkaplenk@lucpul.it.luc.edu (Joe Kaplenk) ]
Rainbo used to be an 3/4 size ice rink but was converted over to rollers
when McFetridge ice rink opened in Chicago. Before that though it was a
theater, so seating is great there, exiting the floor is not a problem
because half of one side is totally open and there are bleachers right
on the floor on the other side.

I've skated at Rainbo on and off, but it is very crowded and small -
great music though. Also until recently they had some major floor
warping problems. They also have a second small floor that is elevated
for beginners to practice.

[ aboulanger@ldeo.columbia.edu (albert boulanger) ]
Chicago currently is a shrunken [skating] version of what it was. One
thing about Rainbo is to make sure you go on the night that you would
be comfortable with the crowd. They have gay nights at times.

[ gophersprt@aol.com (Rhonda) - edited]
I wasn't intending on skating at Rainbo. I visited their pro shop once
and looked around inside, but that's not the atmosphere I'm looking for.
Dance sessions are unheard of here in Minneapolis, so I get to as many
in as possible in Chicago.

[ Hillari Hunter - edited ]
Rainbo has two floors. The main floor is large and oval, and the upper
floor is very small. Both floors have rough patches, scratches and
pockmarks. They could stand to be smoothed out, but overall it's not
bad to skate on. The floors are wood - they try to keep them clean, but
it's hard. The wheels on the rental skates are not cleaned often, and
usually I have go back a few times to get a pair that works properly.

The rink has a snack bar, which is open during kids and family sessions,
and a bar, which is open during adult sessons. Since the snack bar is
not open during adult sessions, one must eat before or after the session.
There is a game room, and a TV on the upper level. When the adults are
there, it's tuned to the cable stations; otherwise, during the other
sessions, it is tuned to sporting events.

There are a variety of skate sessions and lesson times divided between
kids, teens, and adults. The music is provided by DJ's who play rap,
jazz, house, urban contemporary, R&B dusties (oldies), and top 40.
The DJ's are hit or miss, with the music on the Wednesday and Sunday
night adult sessions being particularly bad.

Many of the men think the floor is their personal domain, and they will
cause near-accidents doing wild tricks on wheels without regard to other
skaters. During the teen sessions, the boys will try to trip someone
up just to be funny. Many adults come to the rink, not really to skate,
but rather to sit around and try to see if they can get dates, which can
be annoying if that is not your objective of being there.

The skate guards are good when they are paying attention during the
family and kids sessions, but there has been more than once I have been
knocked down by some kid skating in the wrong direction or not watching
where they are going. This is why I don't go to family or kids sessions
any more.

The management allows private parties to overlap into regular session
times, often causing the regular sessions to start late, which is annoying.
Also, on holidays, such as this Thanksgiving, they often let in too many
people and there is hardly any room to skate comfortably.

[ sbeckstrom@aol.com (Sonya Beckstrom) - edited ]
Rainbo has a wooden floor with plastic overlay. It's just a bit smaller
than the normal size of rinks, but what is interesting about this rink
is that the balcony also has a skating floor, though this wasn't open
on the nights that I skated there. There is a lot of neon on the walls,
and the extremely high ceiling has 14(!) disco balls above the center
of the floor. They have a large game room and also a large birthday
party room.

I skated at Rainbo twice, on a Friday and Saturday night. There were
sessions that run until 4:30 AM!! It was somewhat crowded when I was
there and the floor guards were agressive with their whistles. The
music is predominately black oriented, I don't know if you'd call it
Rap or R&B, but I didn't recognize any of it. They also played the
hokey pokey and the bird dance.

This seemed to be a rink that was became popular during the 70's when
disco was the craze and it's survived from there. No artistic, hockey
or speed clubs - strictly a session rink. From what I've heard, it is
in a farily bad section of town.

Aurora is my favorite. The floor is smaller than North Avenue, but

Planned
Hockey - Outdoor

The Board of Directors of the new Buffalo Grove Friends of the Parks
Foundation has voted [1996] to proceed with an inline skate hockey
rink to be located in the northeast section of Busch Grove Park.

The rink, which will be a 165 x 65 asphalt slab, will have boards
around its sides and all of the normal hockey lines painted on it's
surface. It is hoped that the side boards could be used as advertising
space for local merchants. In addition, it will be pitched in such a
way to allow for normal draining of rain water, but be able to be
flooded in winter for ice hockey.

The Buffalo Grove Park district is planning to operate leagues at
the rink.

See http://www.nslsilus.org/itpld/bgpk.html for additional park
district information.

[ scoopwood@aol.com (Scott Coopwood) - edited ]
Lynwood Sport Center has found the formula for success in the skating
business. Start with a great facility, add good floor, great music,
appropriate lighting, hip DJs, lockers, snack bar with plenty of
room, as good as a Pro Shop as I have seen, all combine to attract a
good crowd who are there to skate. And skate they do - At one point,
most of the crowd of 200 was skating in unison, and get this - in beat.

Lynwood Sport Center is located in Lynwood a southern suburb of Chicago.
It is a little bit of a trip from Chicago, but if you are into skating,
worth the effort. They seem to support most major interests in skating:
inline, speed skating, and artistic. As of this writing, Lynwood has six
teams at the nationals.

Most all of the crowd on Tueday night was equipped with speed skates.
And most knew how to use them. As is usual, a few were a little too
fast, but quickly drew the attention of the experienced floor guards.

You can expect a good skate from their synthetic surface. I spotted very
few blemishes, and never felt out of control.

When you visit their facility, go upstairs to the Pro Shop and say hello
to Dave Shapiro. Dave is experienced with most of the problems you are
likely to face, and can recommend solutions.

I stopped by Lynwood during an artistic session, but did not skate, so
I couldn't tell about the floor quality or music selection. It's just
a bit smaller than the normal size rink, and kind of out in the middle
of farm country. They have an artistic club, but I don't know about
speed or hockey. They have normal session times.

I've also been skating at the North Ave Roller Rink, an old rink from

According to a list from the Theater Organ Journal, this rink has a
Wurlizter Pipe organ, one of the few remaining rink pipe organs in

North Avenue is like stepping back in time about 40 years. Huge floor,

I've also skated at Orbit in Arlington Heights. Orbit is the size of
an ice rink and recently went through a major remodeling and looks
really good.

[ Benjamin Gimpert ]
Orbit in Arlington Heights, is a great rink with one of the largest
floors in the country. North Avenue in Melrose Park is a bit bigger,
and a floor in Oregon [Oaks?] is definitely bigger. Other than those
two, I know of no others larger. Pretty impressive, but unfortunately,
the rink has no air conditioning at this time, so summer-season meets
are out of the question.

[ SKATEMORE@aol.com (Sandy Carter) - edited from several messages]
After skating on and off for 20 years at the Orbit Roller Rink in
Palatine Illinois, I decided that an insurance agency wasn't fun and
I didn't get to see my children enough, so by taking the rink over
when the owner retired we took on quite a challenge.

We have since remodeled the entire building and now feel that we have
a great place for people of all ages to skate and enjoy a very enduring
sport - inline or quad. Our floor is 100 x 200 rotunda maple coated
with Roll-On. We have forty foot ceilings with lights and outer space
murals all the way up. Truly a cosmic experience.

Every Tuesday Morning there is an organ music adult session at Orbit,
featuring CD's of the favorite organists from around the country.
Coffee is served and it's a great time. Palatine is only about 40
miles north of Chicago and we love out of town guests. Maybe we'll
see you there!
