They are often open on Wednesday and Thursday nights for local school fundraisers, which are open to the public. Call to check the schedule. [ sbeckstrom@aol.com (Sonya Beckstrom) - edited ] I stopped by this rink when I was passing through. It's a bit smaller than average size floor, and I want to say that it is yellow plastic. I don't know if there is an artistic club, most of that activity is centered around Las Vegas, but I did see some people skating dance patterns out on the floor. The rink owners were very nice and friendly. ==== Elko, NV 89003 Interstate 80 Megaplex 702-???-???? Planned The Interstate 80 Megaplex is being developed for completion in 1997, including a roller skating rink, 18-hole miniature golf course, six birthday rooms, a snack bar, arcade, skating pro shop, and a concert stage. Also planned is Adventureworks, a 40-foot high indoor rock climbing wall, along with a 24- to 32-lane bowling alley, waterslide, computerized golf and archery ranges, and a shopping center. 1997. ==== Fallon, NV 89406-9310 Skate'n Place 125 Grand Avenue Fallon is located in western Nevada, about 65 miles east of Reno. From Reno, take I-80 east, get off at the Alternate US 50 exit and head east on Alternate 50 and then US 50 to Fallon. The rink is located about 4 miles before you get to Fallon, so after passing the Rt 117 intersection, go about a mile further and then turn left onto Grand Avenue. The rink should be on the left side midway down the street. 702-867-2599 USAC/RS Hockey Club ==== Las Vegas, NV 89121-3017 Crystal Palace Skating Centers (Central) 4680 Boulder Highway Out Boulder Highway (Rt 582) past Sam's Town RV Park/Casino. The rink is on the West side between Twain and Flamingo. From Downtown, take 93/95 South, get off at Flamingo, head East to intersect Boulder and then cut back North. 702-458-7107 Mon 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM Adult Daytime Session Tue 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM Family Night Wed 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM Thurs 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM Adult Classes 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM Fri 7:00 PM - 11:00 PM Sat 12:30 PM - 5:00 PM 7:00 PM - 11:00 PM Sun 12:30 PM - 5:00 PM 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM Wood - about 180 x 80 - Octagonal - Large Party Area In-lines permitted - For Rent RSA Member Rink USAC/RS Artistic and JO Clubs Sigh...with the exception of the Mountasia rink mentioned below, Las Vegas is almost a one-rink town. The Crystal Palace chain consists of four rinks having a similar layout and programs, with no special adult programs or sessions. Roller Hockey and Speed Skating seem to be extremely popular, with some artistic activity. The rinks ave slightly different schedules, for instance the Boulder Highway rink is the only one with with a Sunday night session, the one recommended as most "adult", while artistic events are apparently held at the Decatur rink. This rink is fairly large, perhaps the 185 x 85 NHL hockey rink size. The odd feature is that the building has a rather low ceiling, about 8-feet high along the edges of the floor and with speakers and what not dangling about the same height elsewhere. It's not that low, just out of reach for me on skates, but it seemed depressing and I don't guess many pairs practice at this rink. There was also an area at the far end where the overheads lights had been replaced by black-lights, but when these were off, it created a dark hole, capable of hiding several skaters, and seemingly shortening the floor. Sunday night was the recommended night for "Adults" - it was mostly kids, a few older adults and some younger adults from one of the Military bases in the area, nobody seemed too excited about the music or skating. ==== Las Vegas, NV 89103-5216 Crystal Palace Skating Centers (west) 4740 South Decatur Boulevard From the MGM Grand/Luxor end of the strip, head West on Tropicana then turn right on to Decatur - the rink is just around the corner on the right-hand side. 702-645-4892 Tue 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM Family Night Wed 3:30 PM - 6:00 PM 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM Fri 7:00 PM - 11:00 PM Sat 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM 7:00 PM - 11:00 PM Sun 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM Wood - about 180 x 80 - Octagonal - Large Party Area In-lines permitted - For Rent RSA Member Rink USAC/RS Artistic and JO Clubs I skated here during a Saturday evening public session...mostly kids. The rule enforcement was stricter than at the Boulder Highway rink, I couldn't slow/backwards skate during the couples only, even though the floor was almost empty. This may have been the rink or maybe just that this was more of a kids/teen session. The manager recommended Wednesday afternoon and Saturday night as the more quiet/adult sessions. The rink is home to the Crystal Palace Dance and Figure club, one of the two Crystal Palace skating clubs. [ snowden@ix.netcom.com (Dave Snowden) ] Crystal Palace is a large rink with mostly hockey, but they also have a small artistic club and host the L.V. Artistic Invitational annually. ==== Las Vegas, NV 89130-3415 Crystal Palace Skating Centers (north) 3901 North Rancho Drive This is North of Las Vegas, past the North Las Vegas airport on Rancho. Unless you like traffic lights, head North on US 95 to the Craig Road exit, East on Craig, then back South on Rancho. The rink is on the West side near Jones Boulevard. 702-645-4892 Mon 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM Tue 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM Family Night Wed 3:30 PM - 6:00 PM 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM Thurs 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM Fri 7:00 PM - 11:00 PM Sat 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM 7:00 PM - 11:00 PM Sun 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM Wood - about 180 x 80 - Octagonal - Large Party Area In-lines permitted - For Rent RSA Member Rink USAC/RS Speed Club I didn't skate here, but it looked like pretty much the same format as the Decatur St. rink. ==== Henderson/Las Vegas, NV 89015-5561 Crystal Palace Skating Center (aka Playland Skating) 1110 East Lake Mead Drive Henderson is Southeast of Las Vegas. Take US 93/95 to the Lake Mead Drive/NV 146 exit, head Eastward on Lake Mead for about 3 mils towards the Lake Mead recreation area, crossing Boulder Highway, past Center street and the rink is on the righthand side between Pawnee and Pontiac streets. 702-564-2790(tape)/564-2791(tape) Tue 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM Family Night Wed 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM Thurs 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM Fri 7:00 PM - 11:00 PM Sat 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM 7:00 PM - 11:00 PM Sun 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM Concrete w/Blue Roll-On - 180'x80' - Smooth but somewhat slippery Snack Bar - No Smoking indoors - Games - Large Party Area - Air Conditioning In-lines permitted and available for rent RSA Member Rink I didn't get a chance to skate here, but the rink seemed similar to the other Crystal Palace rinks, substituting a blue plastic over concrete floor for the wooden floors in the other rinks. The rink also has the low ceiling design mentioned above. The manager recommended Wednesday and Thursday as the quieter nights. [ BrettF3853@aol.com (Brett Fields) ] Weekday nights and afternoon sessions on weekends are generally better for adults. Mostly top 40 music is played. Monday evenings are private party nights. This rink is the practice rink for the Crystal Palace Art Club, one of the two Crystal Palace skating clubs. The coaches are Debbie Regano, Leslie Niles, and Doug Bresniser, who teach Dance, Figures and Freestyle. Club times are 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, also 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturday and Sunday. Our club has had many regional and national placements, and recently placed 4th at the Gold Skate Classic for Production Numbers in Bakersfield. ==== Henderson/Las Vegas, NV 89014-2242 Mountasia RollArena 2050 Olympic Avenue (at Mountasia of Green Valley) Olympic Avenue is a small business way off of Mountain Vista, just to the North of where Mountain Vista and Sunset intersect. You can get off US93/95 at the Tropicana exit and head South on Mountain Vista or get off at Sunset and head West then North on Sunset, it's about midway between these options. The Mountasia Fun Center is on the righthand side of Olympic - look for the Water Slide, there's also an inflatable tennis court just past the center. 702-454-4386 Small Oval - Blue Roll-on over Plywood In-lines Skates Permitted RSA Member Rink This is a small rink in one of the Mountasia Family Fun Centers, which is apparently a south/western chain or franchise. The skating floor is pretty small, but not quite tiny. It is blue plastic over plywood or chipboard, in good condition and reasonably smooth. There is also a decent sound system and some lighting effects. As with most "family fun center" rinks, it has extended operating hours compared to your stand-alone rink, but exists mostly for the kids. I visited on a Saturday afternoon - initially it was almost empty, but kids came and went in waves. The attendent who served as skate-guard, DJ and skate-boy didn't seem to mind whatever I did as long as I didn't scare any of the kids or parents. I actually had fun here, even with the kids and a rink small enough that you feel like you're always leaning for a turn. The rink is relatively close to both the airport and strip areas. The recommended times for "Adults" were early afternoons and evenings earlier in the week, but they suggested calling first to check if there was a group or party booked. ==== Reno, NV 89512-3334 King's Skate Country 515 East 7th Street Reno is located in the western part of Nevada, near Lake Tahoe. King's is located near the center of town. From I-80, get off at the Wells Avenue exit, head west on Wells, but immediately turn right onto 7th street. The rink is at the corner of 7th and Valley Road, by the Day's Inn. 702-329-3472/329-5464 Blue Platic Floor - Mediume Size RSA Member Rink [ sbeckstrom@aol.com (Sonya Beckstrom) - edited ] I skated competitively at this rink in the 80's. At that time, they had a strong artistic club. When I last visted [4/95], the floor has pretty much went to hell, with some cracks that the management hasn't fixed, and the building, both on the outside and the inside, needs some TLC. They no longer have an artistic club. They did have a strong speed club, though I don't know if this is still going on, same for hockey. THey have normal session times and prices. The have a blue plastic loor of normal size. It's a good floor to skate on, with the exception of the cracks. They have some skating games at sessions, including the Hokey Pokey and Red Light - Green Light. ==== Reno, NV Viewcrest Rollarena (aka Canyon Ridge Rollarena) Pending Construction RSA Member Rink According to one of the principles, they had been getting ready to open a rink in the Viewcrest shopping center and had registered the rink with the RSA and mentioned it elsewhere. However the owner of the shopping center leased the building to someone else at the last minute, and thus no roller rink. They are currently working on a completely new facility, to be called the Canyon Ridge Rollarena, which they hope to have open in 1996. There are also plans for some in-line skating facilities in the area and, in the longer term, a large Family Recreation Center with associated roller, ice and in-line skating facilties and a roller skating training center. ==== Sparks, NV 89434-8985 King's Skate Country 1855 East Lincoln Way Sparks is located in western Nevada, about 5 miles east of Reno. From Reno, take I-80 east, past Sparks to the Vista Avenue exit, and head north on Vista, turn left onto Prater Way, then left again on Gillard Drive and down to Lincoln Way. The rink is on Lincoln Way, by a Wild Water Kingdom. 702-359-5572 Blue Plastic Floor - Small Size RSA Member Rink [ sbeckstrom@aol.com (Sonya Beckstrom) - edited ] I was there at this rink this past year but did not skate. They have a smaller than average blue pastic floor. It is the new concept of rinks, in that it is in the center of a small amusement park that has bumper cars, a lazer tag area, etc. Due to this arrangement, it caters mostly to children and aolescents and doesnt' have any artistic, speed, or hockey clubs. ========================================================================
