Hillsboro still has a "soul" session on Wednesday nights. I haven't
gone back to see if they've ruined that one too.

[ grr ]
The entry in the in-line FAQ stemmed from a discussion long ago about
the Hillsboro rink changing it's music format, I think to a non-skatable
mix of "classic rock", but the details got edited out along the way...

This is apparently a municipal park and community center with a pool
and small indoor skating rink. According to the attendent, it's about
the size of a basketball court, so it may be a multi-function gym deal.
The rink is also available for party rentals at a very reasonable price.

There was a newspaper article in April 1996 that talked about an
attempt by the owners of this rink to sell it to the Salem municipal
government. Apparently, it's owned by a partnership with many members
and they are intersted in cashing in on the investnmet. The city
declined, saying that such operations were better off in private hands.

As far as I know, it's still operating, under the same ownership.
It is the only large rink in the area between Portland and Eugene.

[ web gleanings ]
Recent improvements for roller hockey at Skate Palace include regulation
roller hockey markings placed on the floor. The rink also has netting
which fully encloses the perimeter, in order to keep spectators safe
from flying pucks.

All hockey activities are organized through the Salem Roller Hockey
Association. If you would like more information please call Chuck
Litchfield at 503-588-8642.

Oaks Park Skating Rink
by Sellwood Bridge
The park is along east side of the river by the Sellwood/Tacoma St.
bridge, toward the city. There's a sign a block or two past the
bridge abutment, then a few more signs zig-zag down to the park
itself and to the rink. The Sellwood bridge is the southernmost
"Portland" bridge over the Willamette, from I-5 get off at the
Rt 26/Ross Island Bridge interchange and take either Rt 43 or 99E
south 3-4 miles to get the to Sellwood bridge or Tacoma street.

I went down to the Oaks (in the Oaks Amusement Park) and they had this
enormous pipe organ. I can't imagine them playing things you can't
dance to, although maybe pipe organ music may be a bit much if that is
ALL they play.

I don't remember, but it wasn't that crowded and I was able to practice
my spins even though they didn't allow me to practice any jumps.

[ mer...@techbook.com (Randal Schwartz) ]
Oaks is still there. It'd better be. It's the oldest and largest rink
in the Pacific Northwest (since 1920-something, I think). They still
play the old pipe organ (the pipes hang over the center of the rink)
on some sessions, but Friday and Saturday nights are top-40 from records
(and maybe CDs).

I attend a "private" session there on Sunday nights which is mostly
rap-ified soul (and some good stuff too :-). It's run by a private
group (the "Rose City Rhythm Rollers") and it's for members only, so
we can pretty much play what we want (well, OK, what the DJ wants :-).

[ this 10 PM Sunday private seesion is still happening, though the ]
[ group may currently be called the Cross Cultural Rhythm Rollers ]

[ g...@tharsis.com ]
If you're in Portland or even Seattle, don't miss this gem. As
mentioned above, this rink has a real Wurlitzer amusement park/theater
pipe organ, with the pipes, drums, bells, etc suspended out over the
center of the floor. The organ is played Wednesday, Thursday and
Sunday nights. Thursday is the official "adult night", but Sunday
night seemed to be mostly artistic skaters with a few randoms thrown
in. The floor is also quite amazing - it's large, with the boards
wrapped around the oval for an extremly smooth rolling surface and is
kept in very good condition. There's also a separate strip across
the rear of the rink with a funhouse style wavy surface, just the
thing for practicing your 3-turns and backwards edges. There is also
a very tiny square practice floor alongside the main floor.

An interesting feature of the rink is that the park is located on the
flood plain of the Willamette River and it does get flooded out now
and then, such as the winter of 1995/96. The floor of the rink is
acutally set up like a raft, buoyed by some 250 55-gallon drums. When
the water rises, the floor is cut loose from the building and floats
above the surface until the water falls again. After that, it's just a
matter of cleaning out the muck in the surrounding areas.

Oaks Park dates back to 1905, though the current rink building was
apparently built in the 1920's, with the floor dating to 1948's. As
an amusement park, Oaks is really rather modest, with mostly carnival
class portable rides. The antiquity seems to be mostly in the the rink
and a kiddy theatre, no big roller coaster or carousel. However, area
residents are quite fond of it as a park, picnic and recreation area.

[ web gleanings ]
A Lesbian & Gay Rollerskating night is sponsored by the Rosetown
Ramblers Square Dance club at Oaks Amusement Park on the fourth Monday
of each month. Please bring canned food items for Esther's Pantry, a
local food bank for people with AIDS.

For more information about the Rosetown Ramblers, send e-mail to
m...@rational.com or leave a messsage at 503-234-9944. Also, see
their web page at http://www.rdrop.com/users/ramblers/ for more info.

====

Tillamook, OR 97141-2943

Tilla-Skate (also Tillamook County Fairgrounds)
4603 3rd Street
503-842-2272

Fri 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM Public Session
Sat 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM Public Session

The number is the general number for the county fairgrounds, but they
mention the skating operation. It's probably an alternate use for one
of the exhibition buildings. Party rentals are available also.

roller hockey rink.

The park also houses the Juniper Aquatic and Fitness Center, Tennis
courts, horseshoe pits, a graveled trail for walking, Pat's Park, a
