The skating floor is wood, with a plastic coating and about medium size.
It's in average condition, with it's share of bumps. It is often dirty,
but I believe they are planning on refinishing it. There are figure
circles. The rink isn't very well lit or ventilated, I don't believe
that it's air-conditioned.

Auburn has a strong artistic club. I've skated competitions here, and
it can get a bit busy during the dance events. The owner, John Gustafson,
is really involved in speed, while his wife Diane goes to Nationals every
year in dance and figures. Their daughter, Cassie Davis, also skates
and she is nationally ranked.

They have fairly normal session times, with an adult organ dance session
on Friday mornings, and I also want to say a Monday night dance session.
They didn't have any games during the public sessions, just some races.

Bellevue, WA 98005-1861

Skate King
2301 140Th Avenue NE
Bellvue is across Lake Washingon, east of Seattle. From Seattle,
take I-5 to Highway 520 (east). Take the 148th street exit and
turn right at the light. Make another right at the next light and
then drive down a long hill. Turn left at your first stoplight.
You will see a shopping complex on the right hand side. The rink is
in the shopping complex, in the back.

Skate King has an ugly linoleum floor, but good music, and on occasion
you get to see some truly fantastic disco skaters.

[ litl...@slumberland.com (Wendi Dunlap) - edited some]
Several of us were looking for evening sessions so that we could start
going skating at least once a week. I used to take artistic roller skating
lessons (and also a bit of ice skating lessons), and I want to get back
into skating. However, weekend evening sessions are, in my experience,
impossible -- they are so crowded that there is no room to do any skating.

So we were looking for a weeknight - Only one rink, Skate King in Bellevue,
had a session on Thursday nights an adult session for 18 and over. so we
decided to go there.

We went to Skate King for several weeks in a row -- and it was pretty bad,
so I don't know if we'll be going back. Why was it bad? Well, it was VERY
unfriendly to beginning skaters. I'm not a beginner, but many of my
friends who were with me are, and they were afraid to go out on the floor
much of the time. The emphasis on Thursday nights seems to be on the
"roller disco" sort of skating that everyone was doing back in 1980. :)

The rink is full of people skating as fast as possible, doing little dance
steps all the way along, and weaving around all those going slower than
they are. Those who aren't skating fast are skating in groups of four or
more, gabbing with each other and not watching their surroundings. Certain
people there go so fast that they are unable to get around other skaters
without grabbing them hard by the shoulder and pushing them out of the way.

Both my friend Shari and I had bruises on our shoulders from one particular
guy who grabbed our shoulders at two different times one evening. I didn't
really think it was a roller derby session, but after that I wasn't so sure...
This particular skater commits skating violations that would have gotten
him busted by the floor guard at any other rink I've ever attended, but not
this one.

We overheard a beginning skater complain to the management that there was
no room for slower skaters out there, and the rink manager said, "Well,
this is an ADULT session. It's not for beginners." As if adults never
learn to skate? He recommended that the beginner come on a weekend, and
she said she had tried that but that there were too many tiny kids and no
room to move. The rink guy shrugged. What kind of attitude is this, I ask
you? Hmph.

Also, the rink floor is dirty and in bad shape - there's a nice big crack
in it, and it's bumpy. The music was poorly chosen (4 Janet Jackson and
2 Madonna songs in one evening) -- come on, let's have some variety!
And, of course, requests were ignored.

[ I've included pretty much the whole rant, less some ice skating stuff ]
[ Some of what she describes scares me - this doens't sound like a very ]
[ well run rink - but other things make it sould like my kind of rink! ]

[ ma...@george.ee.washington.edu (Mauro Costa) - edited ]
I understand her [Wendy] frustration with the rink she mentioned, but I
still think it is an ok rink, if you are not a beginner. I go there
myself when school is not in session.

[ sbeck...@aol.com (Sonya Beckstrom) - edited ]
Skate King is a rink to the east of Seattle in Bellevue, and is really
nice. It's well lighted, with a somewhat small, blue plastic floor.
The floor is currently in the process of being stripped, and so the rink
will be shut down from July 29-August 5 [1996] for refinishing the floor.
However, the size of the floor is made up for by the ambiance of the
crowd.

I normally skate here on Saturday afternoons and Sunday evenings. As
the summer has begun, these sessions are thinning out. They still play
the Hokey Pokey and other games like "Four Corners", "Red Light, Green
Light" and they have races, backward skates, and reverse skates. The
music is enjoyable, although they tend to play too much "hip hop, fast
paced music" which can get to be a bit too much for beginners.

This rink is solely a skating rink, with no artistic, speed, or hockey
clubs - it's just a normal session rink. The floor is fairly clean and
nice to skate on. There are no figure circles marked. They have an
adult night on Thursdays which is quite fast paced, but no organ music
or artistic sessions. As previously mentioned, Sunday night is mostly
compromised of a select group of adults and a smattering of a few others,
and the camraderie is good. Some of the other weekend sessions can be
quite packed.

At the end of the rink, there's a mural of Seattle, complete with the
Space Needle and the Kingdome. What is really interesting is that on
the right hand side of the far end of the rink, there's a "skate car"
that looks street driveable! I'd love to ask them if they'd sell it!

Everett is the nicest of the two rinks north of Seattle, with an
average size plastic over wood floor. The floor is basically very
clean, and they also have a very small surface outside for skating,
which is open in the summer months.

The have normal session times and the sessions are normally pretty
crowded, with many teenagers, so the floor can be pretty unforgiving
at times. They have a metal detector in the lobby - the neighborhood
is pretty rough, though it doesn't look like it.

I've only skated there on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. This past
winter [1996], they had an adult dance night on Mondays, and I am unsure
if that is still going strong. They do have figure circles and also
a "jump harness" for freestyle skaters. There is an artistic club, but
it's mainly for the younger skaters. The coach doesn't teach adults -
prejudice! - so I kind of have mixed feelings about this rink.

Pattisons's is a very nice rink with a plastic coated wooden floor
and is equipped with bright lights. This is my favorite session rink
due to the large floor, although I was there last weekend and it was
dirty! My wheels got soooo dirty!

They have a normal session schedule. It is very busy on Friday and
Saturday nights. They have the usual skates, including backward and
reverse skate. I don't believe they have any games, although they do
have the races.

Pattisons West has a very prominent Speed Club, but no Artistic Club.
However, they do have adult organ music dance sessons on Tuesday nights
and Thursday mornings.

Fort Lewis is a military base located between Tacoma and Olympia, along
I-5 at the Fort Lewis exit. The skating rink is within the base, next
to the bowling alley. I don't know if they are open to the general
public, but the number is listed in the yellow pages. The USAC/RS
directory lists clubs at a Summit Skate Arena in Fort Lewis, which is
probably the same thing.

pretty good with lots of "energy" and good dancing urban/R&B music.

Fantastic wooden floor. Very strong speed club. Terrible music, though.
I believe Thursday nights are "inline only", haven't been there in a while.

The Lynwood rink is smaller than most, but has a nice atmosphere. It
has a plastic coated wood floor, with figure circles. The floor is
pretty dirty, and I believe they will be refinishing it soon. There's
a mural on the back wall, but overall it's fairly dark.

They have normal session times and there was an adult organ music dance
session on Monday nights. They have artistic, speed and hockey clubs.

I have only been here on a few occasions, normally Saturday and Sunday
afternoons when they've been pretty crowded with birthday parties.

The Lynden floor is wooden, and it seems to be comprised in part of their
old floor, which was burned in an arson fire last year and in part of an
old floor salvaged from the closed Burlington rink. The floor is pretty
clean, though it's a bit bumpy and uneven. I think the citizens of Lynden
are just plain happy to have their rink back after the unfortunate arson.

Although the rink seems smaller than some in the area, it has a lot of
"homey" atmosphere to it. Lynden is a very religious town and is quite
subdued, and this seems to be reflected at the rink's sessions. They
are crowded, mainly with lots of families. No games during the sessions
and I don't know if they have races. They do have a backwards skate,
but the floor guards are very stringent and they they don't let you
skate backwards during the rest of the session. I didn't like this part.

Lynden has a strong artistic club, the teachers are Jerry and Marlene
Bruland, from a rink in Bellingham that closed in the mid-80's.

[ MBru...@aol.com (Marlene Bruland) - edited ]
The Lynden Skateway, owned by Pete and Brenda VanOrnum, totally burned
down to the ground on August 20, 1994. They rebuilt the rink building
and purchased the skating floor from Joy and Don Baldwin, who had been
storing the maple floor since their rink was closed a few years back.

Lynden Skateway re-opened for business in February 1996. The floor was
enlarged to 164'x84', larger than average, though there a wealth of
large floors in the Northwest.

Skateway has a strong competitive artistic club. The full time coaches
are Jerry and Marlene Bruland, Dale Sprague, Caroline Diewold. The club
is also active in proficiency test and recreational skating. There is
also a newly founded speed skating club at the rink.

There is a special Adult Sesssion with dance music played on Tuesday
Mornings, and a Special Dance Session are also being scheduled for
next season - once a month on Sunday evening.

Marysville has a smaller than average wooden floor. The floor is very
