    Canton is located on the western edge of the Detroit metropolitan
    area, almost half-way to Ann Arbor.  From I-275, get off at the 
    Ann Arbor Road exit, head west on Ann Arbor for about a half-mile,
    then turn left to head south on Haggerty Road for another half-mile
    or so.  Turn right to head west again on Joy Road, then left onto
    Ronda after crossing some railroad tracks.  The rink is near the
    Canton/Plymough Memorial Airport.

This is the place that State Meets are usually held along with a
thanksgiving invitational that usually has a pretty good representation
from a good number of states.  Their floor is excellent along with their
sound system, but I tend to find that their sessions lacking.

On occasion there is in-line skating at the Pontiac Silverdome [Pontiac]
and at the Joe Louis Arena [Detroit].  I'm not sure if these fit your
idea of a good roller rink - I've never skated there, but they may be
interesting places to skate.

You may have to do some checking around, though, to find out when the
times are.

This rink I recommend highly, they have an excellent floor, and their
sessions are awsome.  I attend these sessions quite frequently even
though it is almost an hour from my home.

Riverside is a redone grand ole' roller rink.  Since they put up acoustic
tiles, the sound inside is not fraught with echoes, and the current sound
system is excellent. The floor is big and in excellent condition.

The music and style of skating reminded me a lot of skating in Florida -
lots of shuffling type music, early Sugar Hill Gang rap, Planet Rock, etc.
This surprised me somewhat being in the middle of the Midwest. But, aha,
the trademark Midwestern step, the backward strut was present. Alas, the
crowd was not the HiNrg crowd you see at the Roxy in NYC.

Riverside is still goin' strong after 56 years!  Lionel, Leo, and Onalee
run the rink jointly now.  For the age of the building, it's quite a
modern facility with all of the new renovations.  While I was never a
competition skater, but I do know a lot of them still skate our Tuesday
and Thursday night organ sessions.  Yes, we're one of the few rinks left
that still play LIVE organ music for 2 sessions.  I'm one of the DJ's,
so I get to play the REAL music on Saturday nights!  

As far as I'm concerned one of the most talented organists in the
country is  Lionel E. LaMay, owner and operator of the Riverside Arena.
