Things I Care About by Jim Walling

Article by Jim Walling about the things he valued most in life.

My Bettie

Beautiful, Talented, Shy

Smart as anyone I ever knew

A perfectionist, with all their problems

Loved Beauty, Hated Pain

Un-appreciated by her parents They wanted Bubbly

Hated hot weather, hated cold weather

Always dreamed of coming to Hawaii

California - first step, but not the same

Loved Hawaii - Loved Me

Without her love and help for 63 years, nothing below would have happened or had meaning.

Family

Our four beautiful, intelligent, talented daughters, who I love dearly, and who have helped me in unbelievable ways, who have clearly surpassed me in their accomplishments, and the three grandsons who have made their mothers extremely proud of them.

Career

Being a ball turret gunner in the last good war.

My work at Stanford where I participated in work that led to six Nobel Prizes, worked directly for and became a friend with one of the prize winners, and had the friendship of Pief Panofsky, a great Scientist and Humanitarian. Everyone who knew him had great love and respect for him. A man with no enemies.

My work as an engineer, working on various structures and projects in the U.S. mainland, Canada and on all four Hawaii Islands.

Life

The fact that I was born to a Pioneer family in the state of Oklahoma when it had only been a State of the Union for fourteen years, and became a citizen of Hawaii when it had only been a state for nine years. How many changes have I seen in my 87 years?

The fact that I am able to see both the forest and the trees, and to recognize the importance of both in working with people.
